He has treated hundreds of adults with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as body-focused repetitive behaviors, including trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), excoriation (skin-picking disorder), and onychophagia (nail biting).  He works with young adults experiencing psychosis for the first time. He has successfully treated numerous people with specific phobias, including needle phobias. He offers Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET), using specialized software and a Meta Quest visor.  Programs are available for the following phobias: Fear of Birds, Fear of Deep Water, Fear of Dogs, Fear of Driving, Fear of Enclosed Spaces, Fear of Flying, Fear of Insects, Fear of Heights, Fear of Mice and Rats, Fear of Needles, Panic Attacks from Agoraphobia, Fear of Public Speaking, Fear of Spiders, Social Anxiety Treatment, and Fear of Vomiting. Dr. Mooney views therapy as an opportunity to identify problems, barriers, and fears and systematically build insight, change thinking, and learn better coping skills.

Through objective psychological testing, he helps his clients explore their mental health, including executive dysfunction (e.g., ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, memory, intellectual functioning, and personality. Dr. Mooney also specializes in pre-surgical evaluations of many kinds, including bariatric surgery. He can accommodate those who need psychological evaluations and testing more quickly, sometimes in a week or two. He conducts a multi-session evaluation to mutually understand his client’s mental health, including a structured diagnostic interview and a battery of tests tapping multiple elements of intelligence, executive functioning, and social functioning. He provides extensive feedback throughout the evaluation, culminating in a complete assessment report with recommendations that improve functioning. He understands that his client’s questions are deeply meaningful and that the answers can be life-changing.
