Heather Swanson
Adult Psychiatrist, Addiction Medicine Specialist

Dr. Heather Swanson is board certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction, both through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). She completed her medical training at the University of Minnesota Medical School, and stayed on for both her Psychiatry residency and Addiction Psychiatry fellowship.

Since completing her formal training in 2017, Dr. Swanson has been practicing full-time at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MAVHCS) in the Addiction Recovery Services (ARS) outpatient clinic. In her practice, she is honored to be able to care for veteran patients who are struggling with a wide variety of mental health and substance use disorders.

In addition to her clinical work, she has been involved in research and has participated in multidisciplinary care teams, seeking to advance the quality of care for her veteran patients and the community in general. Though Dr. Swanson values having the ability to diagnose and treat mental health issues all along the spectrum, her particular areas of interest are Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, and can often be found on the sidelines, cheering on her two children in their various sports endeavors. Though not a born athlete herself, she has become a dedicated Pelotoner (thanks, in part, to the COVID-19 pandemic). She also enjoys traveling, music, art, and reading.
