Kayla Kvell

DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Kayla is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and received her doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) from Winona State University. She is passionate about honoring the uniqueness of each individual when providing care. Informed by the inherent shortcomings of the Western, medicalized psychiatry model Kayla uses an integrative approach to address and identify underlying causes of psychiatric conditions. Her approach to psychiatric care emphasizes whole-body management (e.g., nutrition, exercise, sleep). Kayla incorporates a variety of treatments and recommendations into her plans of care including lifestyle modifications; medications; trauma therapy; nutritional guidance and support; movement and exercise; meditation practices; psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy; and, if needed, referrals for specialty laboratory testing.

Kayla is currently in a comprehensive, multi-modal training program for psychedelic-assisted therapy (ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA) at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute, which is partnered with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). She has worked in various settings such as the emergency department and the Hazelden Betty Ford clinic, and she was the nurse manager at a wellness clinic that offered IV micronutrients and cold therapy for chronic conditions and wellness optimization. Kayla has varied interests within the mental health field, including non-ordinary states of consciousness, addiction medicine, harm reduction, personality disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, personal and intergenerational trauma, metabolic/hormonal dysfunction and its impact on mental health, indigenous healing practices, and Jungian psychoanalysis.
