Jose Phipps, MS
Therapist, LADC, Pre-LPCCMy therapeutic approach integrates person-centered and psychoanalytic perspectives with evidence-based tools, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I strive to create a therapeutic space where clients feel safe, heard, and understood—free from judgment and full of possibility. My practice focuses on supporting individuals navigating substance use, emotional distress, trauma, and life transitions. Together, we explore early experiences, unconscious patterns, and cultural identity to illuminate present-day challenges and create meaningful change.
My credentials include a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Master of Science in Co-Occurring Disorders from Metropolitan State University. I am a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and currently pursuing certification as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Every interaction is grounded in compassion, empathy, and deep respect for each person’s unique story and inherent wisdom. My approach honors both individual healing and the broader social contexts that shape our experiences, recognizing that true wellness happens in relationship and community.
My professional background includes over a decade of experience working with youth and families facing the intersecting challenges of poverty, mental health struggles, and substance use. This diverse experience spans nonprofit, city government, and state-level roles, including the development of culturally responsive youth programming in North Minneapolis, leading Minneapolis’ gang violence prevention strategy, and guiding Minnesota’s adolescent substance misuse prevention efforts. Across these roles, I’ve remained a dedicated advocate for communities historically underserved by mental health and substance use systems. Witnessing how inadequate resources and systemic barriers too often lead to criminalization instead of compassion and care has deepened my commitment to healing-centered approaches grounded in building authentic relationships and supporting individuals through complex emotions and life’s changes.
