Katie Steen

MD, Psychiatrist, Addiction Medicine

Katie Steen, MD is a double-board certified psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist. She completed her medical training and residency at the University of Minnesota, where she served as Chief Resident of the psychiatry residency program. She continues to teach at the Department of Psychiatry, providing clinical training to medical students and residents, and received the Teacher of the Year Award for her work in the Addiction Medicine Fellowship.

Since completing her training, Dr. Steen has been practicing at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, where she has served as Medical Director of Addiction Recovery Services and Medical Director of the Opioid Treatment Program. Her experience there has deepened her expertise in treating substance use disorders and supporting patients through trauma recovery. In addition to these focus areas, Dr. Steen has experience treating the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Steen values collaborative decision-making and believes in a holistic approach to care, working closely with her patients to develop personalized treatment plans that address their unique needs and goals. She incorporates elements of supportive psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with medication management, and approaches mental health care from the Whole Health perspective.

Dr. Steen is a mother of two sons and spends much of her spare time shuttling them to various sports and activities. Born and raised in Saint Paul, she appreciates all that the Twin Cities area has to offer, especially its bike paths, parks, and restaurants. Together with her husband, she enjoys sharing her love of art, movies, and exploring new places with their boys.
