Dr. Venables is a clinical psychologist at Expanse MN. Dr. Venables is a generalist clinician, meaning he provides assessment and therapy for most psychological and mental health concerns. He has extensive training and experience working with individuals in various stages of substance use recovery: individual therapy as a primary means to address problematic substance use and/or developing new strategies for coping with strong emotions and other behavioral concerns without substance use. Dr. Venables also has considerable experience in treating various common mental health concerns and psychological problems including anxiety, mood, trauma, personality, and substance use disorders. His approach blends modern (backed by science) and elements in common to most approaches to therapy. His therapy style integrates cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, mindfulness, motivational, and other primarily CBT-based strategies. Dr. Venables sees a variety of patients at Expanse MN and brings in-house psychological assessment and testing services.
Dr. Venables completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Minneapolis VA Health Care Center. Dr. Venables completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. He also completed a Health Care Quality Improvement fellowship at the Minneapolis VA prior to becoming a staff psychologist. Dr. Venables provides psychological assessments for legal and court-related purposes in his private practice.
